When in January the thermometer drops below -35°C and the wind on upper floors reaches 15-20 meters per second, any weakness in the glazing structure becomes obvious. Residents of Astana know this better than others: a poor-quality plastic balcony door turns into a source of drafts, ice on the slopes, and constant hum.
I have been involved in the production and installation of window structures in Astana since 2012. During this time, thousands of measurements have passed through my hands, and I can say for sure: a plastic PVC balcony door in our climate does not work the same as in Astana or especially in the southern regions. The temperature difference between the apartment and the street in winter reaches 60-70 degrees, and the structure experiences enormous loads.

How balcony plastic doors have changed over the last 15 years
To understand why modern solutions work differently, it is worth briefly looking into the past.
15 Years ago, the glazing market in Astana was just forming. The first plastic balcony doors, imported from Russia and Europe, often did not take into account local specifics. Today we use profiles with a mounting zone width of 70-80 mm, double-glazed units with energy-saving i-glass, reinforced hardware, and special frost-resistant seals. But even within these solutions, there are nuances that determine whether it will last 5 years or 20.

When choosing a double-glazed window with i-glass for better heat retention, we sacrifice transparency by about 5-7% — the energy-saving coating gives a slight bluish tint and reduces light transmission. But we gain comfort in winter, when a regular double-glazed window freezes at the edges.
What happens to a balcony door at -40°C: the physics of the process
To understand why some last for decades while others give up after the first harsh winter, you need to understand the physics.
When the outside temperature is -35°C and the indoor temperature is +22°C, the difference is 57 degrees. Thermal stresses occur inside the profile and the glass unit. Materials expand and contract at different rates. Plastic has a coefficient of thermal expansion of 0,07 mm per meter per degree. Steel reinforcement — 0,012 mm. On a meter-long structure with a temperature difference of 60 degrees, the plastic tends to shrink by 4,2 mm, while the steel shrinks by 0,7 mm. The difference of 3,5 mm creates internal stress.
In cheap doors, this stress leads to microcracks in the plastic, profile deformation, and depressurization. In high-quality structures, a safety margin is built in: the reinforcement is positioned to compensate for the difference, and the plastic itself contains modifiers that increase frost resistance.
A quality door with a good double-glazed unit and a warm spacer frame maintains an interior surface temperature of 15-17°C even in severe frost. No condensation, no ice, and it stays dry.
Expert advice: ask the installer to show how the door-to-wall connection unit will be executed. In Astana, due to building shrinkage and temperature fluctuations, this unit is the weakest point. The correct solution is to use a vapor-permeable tape on the outside and a vapor-proof tape on the inside. If the installer suggests simply filling it with foam and covering it with trim, this is a signal that in a couple of years you will have problems with freezing slopes.
How to distinguish quality installation from defects
Even the most expensive door will be useless if it is installed incorrectly. Here are 5 signs by which I assess the quality of installation when accepting a project.
- Foam protrudes evenly High-quality installation means uniform filling of the seam with foam without voids. Excess foam is cut off after complete drying. If the foam is visible in uneven clumps or protrudes in large pieces — the installer was saving time and did not systematically blow out the seam.
- Vapor and waterproofing tapes are installed. Outside, under the ebb, there should be a vapor-permeable tape that releases moisture from the joint but does not allow water inside. Inside, there should be a vapor-proof tape that protects the foam from condensation. If there are no tapes, the installation was done using a simplified scheme, and after 2-3 years the foam will begin to deteriorate.
- No drafts With the door closed, hold a lighter to the joints. The flame should not flicker. If it flickers, there is a gap. Even a small draft in winter turns into a serious heat loss.
- The door opens and closes smoothly. A quality door requires no effort to close. The handle should turn with a distinct, fixed force, without play. If the door 'bites' or requires pressing to latch the lock — either the installation geometry is compromised or the hardware needs adjustment.
- Sills installed with a slope The external sill must have a slope of at least 5 degrees. If it is installed horizontally or with a slope towards the wall, water will flow in, and ice will form in winter.

Plastic balcony doors price which brand is better for Astana?
In my experience, the best value for money is offered by Rehau profile systems (Blitz or Delight series) and KBE (series 88). They are adapted for cold climates, have reinforced steel cores, and a wide range of hardware. Veka is also a good option, but I would not recommend their budget series (Softline) for Astana — they are designed for a temperate climate.
