Plastic sliding doors in Astana: how not to freeze in winter and not be disappointed in space saving

Author: Arman Nurakhmetov, Chief Engineer for translucent structures in Astana

Have you ever tried to bring a new sofa into a room where the door opens inward, and ended up spending half the day removing the door leaf from its hinges? Or maybe you are just tired of the casement door to the terrace 'eating up' half the usable area of a small kitchen? In the conditions of Astana, where every square meter is worth its weight in gold and the climate dictates harsh rules, the issue of choosing glazing comes to the forefront. I, Arman Nurakhmetov, have been involved with translucent structures in our city for over ten years, and during this time, hundreds of projects have passed through my hands — from elite cottages in 'Zelenaya Voda' to small apartments in 'Alternativa'. This is not just a fashionable trend, but sometimes the only technically correct solution, yet it has nuances that sales managers in showrooms keep silent about.

Evolution of glazing: from blind 'sarcophagi' to a mobile facade

About fifteen years ago, if you wanted to connect a living room with a veranda or make an exit to a balcony, the choice was small: either a swing frame that blocked the passage when opened, or fixed glazing that turned the room into a stuffy «sarcophagus». People put up with losing space when opening a sash for ventilation, and the idea of completely removing the barrier between the house and the street on a summer day was out of the question.

Later, so-called 'book' systems appeared on the market — lightweight interior screens made of cheap plastic. They were popular for zoning walk-in closets or storage rooms, but were unsuitable for outdoor use or even bathrooms. Light, sound, and odors passed through them freely, and the mechanism quickly became loose. These were dead-end technologies that discredited the very idea. Today's technologies have advanced far ahead. The main compromise of modern systems is that to achieve maximum freedom of space transformation (full opening of the opening), one has to accept a higher cost for quality hardware and strict installation requirements. But now we can finally get an airtight, warm structure that works like a real wall, yet completely disappears, blurring the boundary between home and garden.

Why plastic, not aluminum or wood?

I am often asked: what material is best for PVC sliding doors in Astana? Let's figure it out like adults.

Aluminum systems

Aluminum systems are the pinnacle of engineering, especially brands like Alutech. They are technologically advanced, reliable, and withstand enormous loads. But they have one serious drawback for our climate — high thermal conductivity. Without an expensive thermal break (a gasket inside the profile), frost will form on the aluminum frame in winter.

Wood

Wood looks luxurious and warm but requires constant maintenance, is afraid of humidity fluctuations, and most importantly — in the sliding system segment, its price is often unaffordable for the average private homeowner.

PVC profile

Choosing a high-quality PVC profile for an optimal balance of price, thermal insulation, and durability, we inevitably sacrifice the elegance and lightness of the structure compared to aluminum. Plastic sliding accordion doors have a massive threshold (from 50 to 70 mm) and bulkier hinges. But in our winter conditions, when it's -35°C outside, heat retention becomes critically important. Plastic wins here unconditionally.

Choosing a structure: accordion or sliding?

Before looking where to buy, you need to understand if you really need an accordion door? There are two fundamentally different types that are often confused.

Sliding PVC compartment doors

They move parallel to the wall along guides. They are airtight, warm, but when opened, they only cover half the opening. This is an ideal option for exiting onto a balcony or for a passage where you do not need to clear the entire opening.

Plastic sliding accordion doors (folding)

They consist of several sashes (minimum 2, usually 4-7) that fold to the side, freeing the opening completely. This is a real must-have for terraces, verandas, and zoning studios. The downside of high mobility is a more complex hardware design that requires flawless installation. If the master makes a mistake with the level when installing the guides, you will suffer from mechanism jamming for the entire service life.

Expert analysis: 3 non-obvious facts about plastic doors

Many people think the main problem is roller failure. In reality, there are three issues that emerge during operation.

1. Mosquito net problem

When you open a huge opening completely, a natural question arises: how to protect against mosquitoes and poplar fluff? A regular frame mesh is not suitable here. However, there are special accordion meshes that slide into the box. If you are ordering a structure for a terrace, be sure to include this item in the estimate. This is a complex engineering story that cannot be bought later in a store.

2. Transportation and installation

The plastic panel is welded into a single frame at the factory. Do you know how it is brought into the house? Not always. I remember a case when the frame simply could not be brought to the 15-th floor in the 'Severnoye Siyanie' residential complex because it did not fit into the elevator or the stairwell.

3. Durability of fittings

Inexpensive sliding or accordion doors often suffer from hinges and rollers made of silumin (an alloy of aluminum and silicon). In the cold and under the weight of a heavy double-glazed unit, they crack. When choosing a product, clarify: the hardware must be steel from proven manufacturers (Roto, Siegenia, Maco). Expert advice from Arman Nurakhmetov, Chief Engineer of translucent structures: 'Always invite a measurer before the door is manufactured. He must assess the logistics. Sometimes you have to design a collapsible frame, although this is rare, or make a structure with fewer sashes. And yes, do not try to install an accordion door yourself. The slightest level shift — and the mechanism will jam. Trust installation only to a team that specializes specifically in such systems.'

Who actually needs a PVC sliding door?

Based on my experience, I would divide buyers into three categories.

  • Owners of private houses choose sliding accordion plastic doors for access to a terrace or veranda. The main benefit here is the panoramic view and the ability to combine the kitchen-living room with the outdoor area during holidays.
  • Owners of modern studio apartments in new residential complexes (e.g., 'Highvill' or 'Arai') use them for zoning. Put up a partition — you get a separate bedroom. Remove it — a huge space for receiving guests.
  • Families with small children or elderly people often overlook one nuance: a high threshold (about 50-70 mm). This is a serious obstacle for moving a stroller or a person with limited mobility. This is the very compromise I mentioned at the beginning: for the sake of warmth and tightness, we get a threshold that needs to be stepped over.

Comparison of materials: the truth about durability

To dispel myths, let's look at the comparison table of folding systems I have worked with:

MaterialThermal insulation for AstanaReliability of the mechanismInstallation complexityRisks during operation
PVC (70-80 mm profile)High (5--chamber)Medium (depends on fittings)High (welded frame)Sash sagging, threshold freezing
Aluminum (with thermal break)Medium (good, but expensive)HighMediumCondensation formation in frost
WoodHighLow (for complex systems)Very highWarping from moisture, high price
Cheap plastic ("book")Absent (internal)LowLowRapid wear, flimsiness

The cost of the matter: how much will quality cost?

When a client asks to calculate the price of sliding plastic accordion doors in Astana, I immediately explain: cheap is not about such a structure. If you see a price comparable to a standard balcony unit, then you are either looking at an interior version or an economy segment with a single-chamber glass unit that won't save you in winter.

The cost consists of three components:

  1. Profile and double-glazed window: an expensive, thick system with energy saving.
  2. Hardware: it is what ensures smooth operation and folding. It costs more.
  3. Installation: complexity of installation with mandatory use of a laser level and high-quality mounting foam.

In Astana, the market is flooded with offers. Companies like 'AVS Plast' offer in-house production, allowing them to control the quality of welding and assembly. It is important to contact those who have experience specifically with folding systems, not just with installing regular windows.

Conclusions: 5 steps to the right choice

Summing up, as an engineer and as a resident of Astana who also glazed his own home, I want to give clear instructions.

If you want plastic sliding doors to serve you faithfully, remember five rules:

  1. Do not confuse the purpose: for a terrace and outdoors — only warm multi-chamber PVC. For an internal partition in an office or dressing room — lightweight aluminum or budget plastic is possible.
  2. Look at the hardware: ask to see the mechanism. The rollers should be metal, not plastic.
  3. Solve the insect issue in advance: order a mosquito net at the same time as the door.
  4. Prepare for the threshold: if there are residents with limited mobility in the house, consider a 'threshold-free entry' system (a guide rail recessed into the floor), although this is more complex to install.
  5. Trust the measurement and installation to pros: don't skimp on installation. Shoddy work can ruin any, even the most expensive, system within six months.

In my practice, there was a case where a client, due to a difference of 30 000 tenge, chose a cheap "accordion" door from a little-known company. A year later, he came to me for a consultation with a package of photos: the mechanism was jammed, the leaves were warped, and the gaps were so drafty that in winter the hallway was as cold as a vestibule. He had to replace the entire structure. The miser pays twice, and in the case of facade architecture, this works at 100%.

Today, modern technologies allow the realization of any architectural ideas, from panoramic glazing of a cottage to elegant zoning of a studio. Plastic sliding doors are an elegant solution that saves space and provides freedom, but only with proper design and professional installation. Choose wisely, and your home will be not only warm but also comfortable.

Contract 085

The guys from okna-plastikovye.kz glazed my balcony. Now it looks like a toy from the outside. The most beautiful in our house) And from the inside it even became more spacious because the manager of okna-plastikovye.kz advised making an extension. I am very satisfied. Thank you.

Contract 080

I built a house with arched window openings to my own misfortune. It turned out that finding a company that makes arched PVC windows is not so easy. They exist, of course, but the prices and deadlines are outrageous!

At okna-plastikovye.kz we agreed on the price, they manufactured my non-standard arches quickly, installed them according to standards (PSUL, vapor barrier — everything in place). The installers answered all my questions. I recommend the company okna-plastikovye.kz. When it comes to interior doors, I will contact them as well.

Contract 071

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the entire team of the company okna-plastikovye.kz for my new windows. And to the polite female manager who patiently told me about all the profiles and their properties. And to the measurer who recommended making the fixed sashes narrower. And to the management for the discount that allowed me to install all the windows in the apartment at once. I can't stop rejoicing at how warm and quiet it is at home now.

Contract 068

I contacted the company okna-plastikovye.kz for a new window. I was satisfied. I already have experience ordering windows from another company, and it was not the most pleasant. After those installers, there was a pile of trash, protruding mounting foam, and a complete lack of understanding of how to use the window.

The guys from okna-plastikovye.kz are polite and neat. They trimmed the foam under the windowsill, cleaned up after themselves, and made neat slopes. They showed me how to use different modes on the hardware (ventilation, micro-ventilation). okna-plastikovye.kz although now I already know this myself, it was still nice. Thank you for your responsible attitude and responsiveness to people!
